arc42 is an open-source, freely available template for the documentation and communication of software and system architectures, originally created by Dr. Gernot Starke and Dr. Peter Hruschka in 2005. The template is structured into twelve modular sections covering concerns such as requirements, constraints, building blocks, runtime and deployment views, architectural decisions, and quality scenarios. Completely process- and tool-agnostic, arc42 is well-suited for lean and agile development contexts and can be applied to projects of any size or complexity. It is supported by extensive documentation, practical examples, and professional training aligned with the iSAQB certification programme.
